AMC 10/12 test dates have moved up to NOVEMBER!
AMC 8 has moved back to January. AIME test dates have moved up to February. 
The American Mathematics Competitions are nationally syndicated math tests annually presented by the Mathematical Association of America. The AMCs are the first tier of competitions leading to the International Mathematical Olympiad. All Ivy+ institutions consider AMC scores of prospective students.
  • AMC 8, good for grades 4-8, 25 multiple choice questions, 1 point each, 40 minutes (Jan 18-24, 2022)
  • AMC 10, good for grades 6-10, 25 multiple choice questions, 6 points each, 1.5 points for blanks, 75 minutes (Nov 10 & 16, 2021)
  • AMC 12, good for grades 8-12, 25 multiple choice questions, 6 points each, 1.5 points for blanks, 75 minutes (Nov 10 & 16, 2021)
  • AIME, qualifiers only, 15 questions with 0-999 answers, 1 point each, 3 hours (Feb 8 or 16, 2022)
  • USAJMO/USAMO, qualifiers only, 6 proof questions, 7 points each, 9 hours split over 2 days (TBA)
  • To register for one of the above exams, contact an AMC 8 or AMC 10/12 host site. Some offer online registration (e.g., Stuyvesant and Pace).

No calculators allowed since 2008. Historical cutoffs for honor rolls and AIME qualification are charted below. See the MAA's 2014 USAMO Selection Report for insights into selection and 2009-2014 AIME item difficulty. Cutoffs for USA(J)MO should be ~230 = 130 (from AMC 10/12) + 10·10 (from AIME).

  • Read "Mathematical Problem Solving for Competitions" from ​Book VI. (print page 191, pdf page 212)
  • ​Practice under testing conditions. Score yourself - timed and untimed. Keep a log and set incremental goals.
  • Start with Book VIII for AMC 10 prep and Book IX​ for AMC 12 prep. Use problem classifications to practice by topic.
  • Discuss problematic questions with other mathletes! Post in Hangouts or Brilliant groups MSB/HSA+.
  • Have fun and remember - the best part of competition math is making memories with people!
